Hard Drive Degaussers
With new
regulations in effect like HIPAA and GLB-Act,
keeping company, employee and customer
information private is mandatory. Our
degaussers will help you meet these new physical
safeguard regulations by completely
demagnetizing all data from hard drives and
tapes.
It important
to note that not all degaussers will erase hard
drives. The field strength and the
orientation of the degaussing field need to be
able to penetrate the aluminum housing of the
hard drive and be strong enough to reverse the
polarity of the high coercivity magnetic
particles on the disk platters.
Although the
degausser models
listed below have been designed to erase hard
drives, their strong degaussing fields will also
erase today's high-coercivity tape such as DLT, SDLT, 3480's,
AIT and more.
Degaussing gives
you in-house control of all sensitive and
private information. Computers
have been designed to be resilient. They
allow information to be recovered if
accidentally deleted or even if the hard drive has been reformatted.
Even after deleting or reformatting the hard
drive, magnetic patterns of existing data still
exists on the disk platters. Degaussing
demagnetizes the entire hard drive including the
disk platters - leaving no magnetic patterns on
the hard drive.
Once
degaussed, the hard drive will be unusable and
will not be recognized by the computer. In
fact, the erasure is so deep that the factory
written servo tracks on the disk platters are
also demagnetized leaving no reference points
for the read heads to key in on.
Note: Non-working hard drives
contain all of the original data and can be
easily recovered. Degaussing provides the
quickest (under 30 seconds) and most complete
erasure of all hard drives.
Frequently Asked Questions
When should I
degauss my media?
Media should be degaussed before media
re-use and media disposal. With all of the
un-erase utilities available, you shouldn't risk
your data getting into the wrong hands.
Therefore, it should be part of your computer
policy to degauss all hard drives before
returning the hard drives for warranty repair,
before donating to charity, before transferring
your computer to another department or before
disposal of the computer.
What about
hard drives that don't work?
Hard drives that are non-operational
still retain information on the disc platter. Degaussing
magnetically erases all of the information
contained on the disc platters, thereby making
the hard drive safe for disposal.
Remember, hard drives do not have to be hooked
up to be degaussed.
Are Hard
Drives re-usable after degaussing?
No, hard drives are not reusable after
degaussing because Garner's hard drive
degaussers erase all data, formatting and
control track (servo track) information. This
information is contained on hard
drives in magnetic patterns. Garner's hard drive
degaussers remove all magnetic patterns
eliminating the possibility of recovery and
ready the hard drive for disposal.
